On 3/24 I went for my first official day of volunteering. I had already spent a few hours at the facility, getting to know the layout of the facility, as well as getting to know some of the residents there. However, this day was strictly being with residents.
The facility had just gotten a new Nintendo Wi, which is a new type of nintendo system. It allows people to be more interactive while playing-you play sports games and actually go through the motions of each sport.
The activity for the day was playing the Nintendo Wi, and believe me, the elders loved it! It is the perfect amount of physical activity needed to have fun, without getting too worn out and tired. Everyone congregated in the 'living room' and it was a popular activity to get all residents together.
They all seemed to love the new system and we were all having a great time. This activity was for the assisted living facility section, and all were able to partake in it. Some were better than others, but I do not think this was due to any one person being physically or mentally more able- I just think some people are good at those things and some are not.
One older women was having trouble and it was nice to see the other residents helping her and showing her how 'they do it.' I had a fun time interacting with the residents. It was nice to just sit back, slow down, and enjoy my time with the residents. It was nice to partake in something that I commonly due with people my own age. It somewhat broke the stereotype that elder people cannot do the same things as younger people.
I cant wait to see what they have in store for me next time....
