On Friday, February 22nd, I went to Sunrise of Simi Hills Assisted Living and Memory Care facility and I completed my orientation. While there I had to fill out an application and take a tour of the facility. The woman who organizes the volunteer activities and conducted the entire orientation, is really nice and helpful. She gave us schedules of both the assisted living center activities and the 'reminiscence hall' facility activities. The 'reminiscence hall' contains patients who have Alzheimer's. These two schedules vary because the assisted living activities occur mainly in the day time, where the 'reminiscence hall' patients stay up later at night. I learned a lot about the facility and the type of relationships they establish with their patients. It was nice to go and be informed on what the 'expectations' are while volunteering.
After the orientation, I feel excited about volunteering at this facility. I have done volunteer work before, but was not as hands on with patients as I believe I will be here. This should make for a great experience.
